Sawing - The First Step
Author: Sunette van den Berg (28 April 2010)
Difficulty: Easy

Place your metal flat on the benchpeg and hold your saw against the edge of the metal at a 90 degree angle.

Hold the metal plate flat on the bench peg with your lefthand (if you are righthanded) and grip it tightly with 4 fingers on top and your thumb on the bottom of the peg. With the saw in your right hand, rub the blade against the edge with an upward motion a few times.

This will create a notch in the metal and an ideal starting point. Now move your blade downward lightly, don't put any pressure on the blade, let the saw do the work, and continue with a steady up-and-down movement along the line of your pattern. Keep to the outside edge of your design line whilst sawing.

Continually check that you keep your sawframe 90 degrees to your work, it is natural to push the nose of your saw forward, but it is necessary to keep the frame upright.
