Jewellery Techniques I Level: Introduction
Aim:
To teach the student the very basics of jewellery making. What to do in order to manipulate metal eg. Annealing principals. Making a ring to a specified size. The fundamentals of Soldering. Standard finishing routine eg. Filing, sanding and polishing. Safety in the workshop. Proper use of tools and equipment.
Techniques Covered:
Sawing, replacing broken saw blades, correct saw blade size for thickness of metal, marking on metal, transferring designs, basic soldering, filing, sanding, polishing, hammering, use of pickle, annealing, working with a flexi shaft, drilling holes, polishing on a large polisher, making buff sticks, proper use of a file. How to make the following: wire and plate, jump rings, basic wedding band, wedding band with pierced detail, pendant, bail, loose stack rings, twisted wire, basic chain, basic toggle clasp, basic bezel stone setting.
Outcome:
The student is comfortable and confident in the studio surroundings. They understand the basic safety practices. They can identify and properly use all the basic tools and equipment in the studio. They understand and can apply jewellery making beginner techniques in the form of simple projects.

- Basic wedding band (copper)
- Letter Pendant with pierced detail (copper)
- Basic wedding band with pierced detail (copper)
- Stack rings (silver)
- Multiple link bracelet — chain (silver)
- Ring or pendant with cab stone
Prerequisites:
There are no previous educational requirements for entry into the course. Artistic ability is
necessary, as well as practical skill for working with tiny articles and fine precision tools. Technical aptitude, good eyesight and eye-hand co-ordination are also important. The ability to concentrate for long periods and to do neat precise work are important qualities of successful goldsmiths/jewellers. Sometimes a jeweller works on a particular piece for days or weeks and this requires perseverance and concentration.
Further Studies:
If after completing Jewellery Manufacturing I - Beginner Techniques, you would like to continue your studies with Jewellery Manufacturing II - Intermediate Techniques, there is a practical interim project that needs to be completed by the student at home. Please ask the course facilitator for more details.
Duration:
Total Hours: 30. The minimum time to complete the course is 5 days, the maximum 5 weeks.
This can be done in one of the following ways:
- 6 hours a day for 5 days (9:00 — 3:00)
- 6 hours a day once a week for 5 weeks (9:00 — 3:00) - Weekdays
This option can also be done over 5 consecutive Saturdays.
Includes:
- Prescribed Book
- Course project notes
- Copper sheet and wire for copper projects
- 50 grams of Sterling silver
- Cabochon stone for final project (variety of stones available)
Excludes:
- Basic tool kit: (not compulsory)
- Tuition fee includes the use of studio tools only
Extra consumables like saw blades, sandpaper, drill bits, rubber wheels are available for purchase on the premises. You may provide your own tools and silver if preferred.
